GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands — History was made in the Cayman Islands on Wednesday as Hon. Gloria McField-Nixon was officially sworn in as the country’s first female Deputy Governor and Head of the Civil Service.
McField-Nixon took the oath of office during a formal ceremony before immediately assuming her constitutional responsibilities. Following her swearing-in, she attended her first Cabinet meeting as Deputy Governor, joining the Governor, the Premier and Cabinet ministers in her new role.
Her appointment marks a significant milestone in the Cayman Islands’ history, breaking a longstanding gender barrier in one of the nation’s highest constitutional offices and signalling a new chapter for the public service.
As Deputy Governor, McField-Nixon will serve as Head of the Cayman Islands Civil Service, providing leadership to the public sector and overseeing the administration of government departments while helping to ensure the efficient delivery of public services.
Government officials described the appointment as a defining moment for the territory, noting that McField-Nixon’s elevation to the post reflects both her years of public service and the continued advancement of women into senior leadership positions.
Her historic appointment is expected to inspire future generations of Caymanian women and girls aspiring to leadership in government and public administration.
