Silver Airways Ceases Operations, Impacting BVI Travelers and Employees

June 11, 2025 — Silver Airways has announced the immediate cessation of all operations, leaving many travelers in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and beyond in a state of uncertainty. The airline, based in Hollywood, Florida, had previously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2024, with hopes of restructuring. However, as of today, all flights have been canceled, and the airline's future remains bleak.

Silver Airways, which had long served routes connecting Tampa, Orlando, and various Caribbean destinations, including the BVI, confirmed that a transaction to sell its assets to another airline holding company fell through. The new owners decided not to continue Silver's flight operations, effectively ending the service for thousands of passengers who relied on the airline for travel to and from the Caribbean.

In a statement on their website, Silver Airways expressed regret over the abrupt termination of their services: “In an attempt to restructure in bankruptcy, we entered into a transaction to sell our assets, but unfortunately, the buyer has determined not to continue operations.” They urged travelers not to go to the airport and advised that any credit card purchases should be refundable through credit card companies or travel agencies.

Impact on the BVI

The cessation of Silver Airways operations is expected to have significant repercussions for the British Virgin Islands. The airline provided vital air connectivity for tourists and residents alike, and its abrupt closure may disrupt travel plans and local economies that depend on tourism.

Moreover, employees of Silver Airways, including those who may have been stationed in the BVI, are likely to face job losses. Local residents working in roles related to the airline, from ground staff to support services, may soon find themselves without employment.

The BVI government has not yet issued a statement regarding the situation.

As travelers scramble to make alternative arrangements, the impact of Silver Airways’ closure is being felt far beyond Florida. The BVI, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant tourism industry, now face challenges as it navigates the fallout from this unexpected airline shutdown.

Travelers affected by this sudden change are encouraged to reach out to their travel agencies and monitor updates for potential alternatives for their journeys. The tourism sector in the BVI is hopeful for swift solutions to mitigate the disruption caused by the loss of Silver Airways.
