BVI SUMMER FILM ACADEMY PRODUCTION BOOT CAMP A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

The BVI Film Commission is proud to announce the successful completion of its Summer Film Academy Production Boot Camp — a week-long immersive training experience designed to equip aspiring local filmmakers with real-world production experience and industry mentorship.

The Summer Film Academy Production Boot Camp, presented in collaboration with FaceForward Productions and hosted at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, welcomed participants aged 17 to 65 for an immersive, hands-on experience across every department of a working film set. From directing and cinematography to acting, script supervision, props, hair and makeup, and wardrobe, participants rotated through various roles—developing essential skills, discipline, and the creative confidence needed to thrive in the film industry.

At the heart of the programme was the production of an original short film, Between the Lines, written by academy participant Dakarai Wheatley Adams — the winner of this year’s Film Commission Scriptwriting Competition and last year’s Student Smartphone Film Competition.

Natalie Hodge, Film Commissioner at the BVI Tourist Board & Film Commission said, “This academy wasn’t just about teaching filmmaking — it was about creating opportunities for the participants, nurturing their dreams and talent, and supporting the development of our local film industry. It’s also about giving participants access to the tools, resources, and professionals who can share real-world knowledge and expertise to help them thrive in this industry in and beyond the territory.”

Founder of FaceForward Productions, CJ Faison and Director of Photography, Brittney Janae who worked closely with participants on set throughout the week, guided the students through pre-production, cinematography fundamentals location scouting, scene blocking and camera, lighting and visual storytelling techniques. Their combined mentorship fostered a collaborative and empowering learning environment.

Additionally, the 3-day Lunch & Learn sessions added an extra layer of inspiration, featuring dynamic insights from visiting PR and Brand Strategist Crystal Frost, who led powerful discussions on branding, purpose, and professionalism.

Emmy-nominated and Award-winning Producer, CJ Faison shared, “This was special. These emerging filmmakers leave not only with a completed project but with a strategic guide to shaping their future in the industry," said Faison. "Opportunity and exposure are essential—and this programme is dedicated to providing both. I was honoured to be a part of it, “Faison concluded.

The final short film will premiere at the 284 Excellence Film Festival scheduled for 30th October to 2nd November 2025, marking the participants' first public showcase of a project they created, produced, and performed themselves."

The Film Commission extends heartfelt thanks to the participants, guest mentors and sponsors.

“Without the support from our sponsors, this academy would not have been possible,” said Hodge. “Their belief in our youth and our mission to grow the film industry in the Virgin Islands is deeply appreciated.”
