Virgin Islander Killed On I-44 In Missouri
Jamal Jones of the British Virgin Islands was killed yesterday morning, Friday 15th August 2025 in a horrific vehicular incident on the I-44 in Missouri, USA.
Information released is that just after 5:30 a.m., yesterday morning, Lawrence County authorities notified MSHP about a crash on eastbound I-44 near Mt. Vernon.
MSHP Troop D Sgt. Mike McClure said that an eastbound passenger car had hit a deer on the road. The vehicle stopped in the driving lane and one of the passengers got out of the car to remove the deer from the roadway.
A tractor-trailer then saw the car and broke hard to try and avoid a collision, but ended up striking the pedestrian and the vehicle, MSHP says. The tractor-trailer also overturned in the crash and landed on the south side of I-44.
The passenger was later pronounced deceased, and the driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to an area hospital with unknown injuries. MSHP said.
While they have not identified the passenger, we now know the passenger to be Jamal Jones of the Virgin Islands. We understand the family had just finished dropping off a child at college before heading back to Springfield-Branson National Airport.
Jamal Jones is known to work with the Government of the Virgin Islands, and a beloved resident and civil servant.
Guavaberry Media extends deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
