RVIPF URGES REMOVAL OF LICENSE PLATES FROM INOPERABLE AND DERELICT VEHICLES
The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is advising all vehicle owners to remove and secure the license plates from any vehicle that is not in regular use. This includes:
1. Vehicles that are inoperable and parked for an extended period.
2. Vehicles that have been taken to a mechanic or garage and are expected to remain there for an extended period.
3. Derelict vehicles: Vehicles that have been left unattended and are not expected to be repaired.
Investigations have revealed that license plates from such vehicles are being removed without the owner’s knowledge and affixed to other vehicles. These vehicles are then being used to facilitate criminal activity, placing the registered owners at risk of being linked to unlawful acts.
Owners are reminded that license plates remain legally connected to them, regardless of where or how they are used. Failing to remove plates from inactive vehicles increases the likelihood of them being misused and may expose owners to unnecessary legal complications.
The RVIPF is urging the public to take this precaution seriously. Any person who discovers that their plates have been stolen or tampered with should also report the matter immediately by contacting the nearest police station, calling the non-emergency access number 311, or reporting anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1800-8477 (TIPS).
The RVIPF appreciates the cooperation of the public as we continue working together to prevent crime and maintain the safety and security of the Territory.
