Lewis S. Hunte, KC, Celebrates 60 Years at the Bar
Lewis S. Hunte, KC, has been a pillar of the Virgin Islands legal community for more than four decades. Called to the Bar of England and Wales on 23rd November 1965, Mr. Hunte, KC, moved to the Territory in 1982 to serve as Attorney General, later acting as a Judge of the High Court of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.
A former Deputy Chief Parliamentary Counsel in Barbados, Deputy Registrar of the Court of Appeal in Jamaica, and an accomplished legislative draftsman, Mr. Hunte, KC, has shaped legal development across the region, including the 1982 Intellectual Property legislation for Barbados, the Model Insurance Legislation for the Caribbean Law Institute, and in the Virgin Islands the Police Act, Interpretation Act, Ports and Marine Services Act, Fire and Rescue Service Act, Beach Protection Act, and all of the subsidiary legislation that was passed during the three years he served as Attorney General. He is also widely recognized for his pivotal role in drafting the groundbreaking International Business Companies Act of 1984. Chapter XIV of his 2018 autobiography, Memoirs of a Caribbean Lawyer, gives a full and accurate account of the history of the International Business Companies Act as no other person will ever be able to tell it.
In private practice, he was a partner at the law firm Harney Westwood & Riegels (now Harneys), and he is the Founder of Hunte & Co., where he continues to serve clients with distinction. Most notably, he was admitted to the Inner Bar in 2003.
Mr. Hunte, KC, has built a career that reflects a lifetime of service, leadership, and commitment to the advancement of Virgin Islands and Caribbean jurisprudence.
