76 persons have been registered as British Citizens following a ceremony held at Government House on Tuesday 17th March, 2026.
During the ceremony, newly registered British Citizens heard congratulatory remarks from Acting Governor of the Virgin Islands, Mr. David D Archer Jr. and Registrar General, Mrs. Tashi O’Flaherty-Maduro.
During his remarks, the Acting Governor noted that the new British Citizens should not take this new achievement lightly, but understand that they now represent a larger part of the world and they must take the responsibility seriously.
The Governor said, “The shared values in our community include respect and concern for others who are less fortunate, or simply those who are considered to be different. Perhaps, when you first came here, you felt different yourself. But, as the Bible reminds us, you shall love the stranger, for you were once a stranger in the land.”
Meanwhile, Registrar General, Mrs. Tashi O’Flaherty-Maduro said,“Today marks a significant milestone in the lives of those who will shortly take the Oath of Allegiance and the Pledge of Loyalty. It is a moment that reflects commitment, belonging, and the start of a new chapter. Becoming a British citizen is not simply the completion of an administrative process. It represents a deeper connection to the values, responsibilities, and privileges that come with citizenship. It signifies your commitment to uphold the laws of the United Kingdom and the principles that guide our society, respect, fairness, justice, and service to the community. For many of you, this journey has required patience, perseverance, and dedication. Today we recognise and celebrate those journeys.”
She went on to highlight, “Citizenship also carries important responsibilities. It calls on each of you to contribute positively to society, to respect the rule of law, and to support one another in building safe, vibrant, and inclusive communities. Today’s ceremony is therefore both a celebration and a commitment, one that welcomes you fully into the British family and recognises the role you will play in its continued growth and success.”
