CIBC Caribbean Warns Customers of Fraudulent Calls Targeting Banking Information
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI — CIBC Caribbean is alerting customers to a recent increase in fraudulent communications after reports emerged of scammers attempting to obtain sensitive banking information through fake calls made via Google Meet and social media applications.
In an advisory issued to customers, the bank said it has become aware that individuals are receiving calls from email addresses resembling cibccustomer*@gmail.com, warning that these communications are not affiliated with CIBC Caribbean and should not be trusted.
The bank urged customers not to answer calls from the suspicious email address or any similar variations, emphasizing that the calls are part of a scam designed to compromise personal and financial information.
CIBC Caribbean stressed that legitimate bank representatives will never contact customers through social media, text messages, email, or phone calls to request confidential information or instruct them to take actions that could expose their accounts.
Specifically, the bank said customers will never be asked to download remote desktop applications, click on suspicious links, or disclose sensitive details such as One-Time Verification Codes (OTVCs), Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), debit or credit card numbers, CVV security codes, expiration dates, email passwords, or online banking login credentials.
The financial institution warned that any communication requesting such information should be treated as a fraudulent attempt to gain unauthorized access to a customer’s bank account.
Customers who receive suspicious calls or messages are advised not to engage with the individuals involved. Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or has shared personal information is encouraged to immediately report the incident to CIBC Caribbean’s Fraud Team by emailing fraud@cibccaribbean.com and providing a screenshot of the call where possible. Customers may also contact the bank directly using the telephone number listed on the back of their bank card.
CIBC Caribbean reaffirmed that protecting customers’ personal and financial information remains a top priority and thanked customers for their vigilance and cooperation in helping combat fraud.
