ROAD TOWN, Tortola, British Virgin Islands – The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has strengthened its commitment to delivering high-quality patient care through a three-day Leadership Development Workshop designed to empower its nursing leadership team.
The workshop, held from June 22 to 24, brought together Nurse Managers, Nursing Supervisors, and Charge Nurses for intensive leadership training aimed at enhancing clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and continuous quality improvement across the Territory’s healthcare system.
The programme was delivered in collaboration with Healthcare Transformation Solutions (HTS), a clinician-led healthcare consulting firm specializing in leadership development, healthcare transformation, and performance improvement.
The initiative forms part of BVIHSA’s broader strategy to improve patient outcomes by investing in frontline healthcare leaders while building organizational capacity through strategic partnerships.
Throughout the workshop, participants received practical training in identifying operational challenges, implementing evidence-based solutions, improving staff engagement, and leading quality improvement initiatives within their respective departments.
Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Pearla Sylvester-Thomas, described the programme as a significant investment in the future of healthcare in the Virgin Islands.
“Quality patient care begins with strong leadership,” she said. “By equipping our Nurse Managers and Charge Nurses with the skills and tools to lead improvement initiatives, we are strengthening our ability to deliver safe, efficient, and patient-centred care across the organization.”
Chief Nursing Officer in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Mrs. Jacinth Hannibal, also welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the importance of leadership development in building a resilient healthcare system.
“Developing nursing leadership is critical to building a resilient healthcare system,” Mrs. Hannibal stated. “This partnership reflects a shared commitment to continuous improvement and better health outcomes for the people of the Virgin Islands.”
Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley, commended the collaborative effort, noting that investments in healthcare professionals ultimately benefit the wider community.
“Strategic partnerships such as this help position our healthcare system for long-term success,” Hon. Wheatley said. “By investing in our healthcare professionals, we are ultimately investing in the quality of care provided to our community.”
As a key outcome of the workshop, participants developed unit-specific action plans and quality improvement projects that will be implemented across BVIHSA to enhance patient care, improve operational effectiveness, and strengthen staff engagement.
The leadership initiative underscores BVIHSA’s ongoing commitment to developing a highly skilled healthcare workforce capable of delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred services throughout the Virgin Islands.
