ROAD TOWN, Tortola, Virgin Islands — The British Virgin Islands has recorded its first homicide of 2026 following a fatal shooting in Huntums Ghut during the early hours of Sunday, casting a somber shadow over Virgin Islands Day celebrations.
The victim has been identified as K’moi Walters, who succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital. The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has launched a homicide investigation and is appealing to the public for information as detectives work to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves across the Territory, with many expressing disbelief that a day traditionally reserved for celebrating the Virgin Islands’ heritage, culture, and unity has instead become one of mourning.
Among those offering condolences was Fifth District Representative Kye Rymer, who described the killing as a heartbreaking loss for both the victim’s family and the wider community.
“It is with deep sadness that we awoke this Virgin Islands Day to the tragic news of the senseless death of K’moi Walters in Huntums Ghut,” Rymer said.
He noted that the day was meant to celebrate the Territory’s history and shared identity but had instead become one marked by grief.
“My heart goes out to K’moi’s mother, Tasha, his family, and everyone whose lives he touched,” Rymer said. “K’moi had a full life ahead of him. Like so many of our young people, he had dreams to pursue, aspirations to fulfil, and a future of endless possibilities. It is heartbreaking that those opportunities were stolen in such a cruel and senseless act of violence.”
Rymer also remembered Walters as a devoted father to his young son, Kyrie, saying the loss would be deeply felt by all who knew him.
Calling on the community to assist law enforcement, the Fifth District Representative urged anyone with information, regardless of how minor it may appear, to come forward.
“Justice for K’moi and his family depends on the willingness of those who know something to speak up,” he said.
The RVIPF has likewise appealed for public cooperation as investigators continue to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
The killing marks the Territory’s first homicide of 2026, ending what had been more than six months without a recorded murder in the Virgin Islands.
As the investigation continues, residents across the Territory are left reflecting on the devastating impact of gun violence and renewing calls for greater community cooperation to help bring those responsible to justice.
Police have indicated that further information will be released as the investigation progresses. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
