BVI Summer Film Academy Empowers Emerging Storytellers to Bring Local Stories to Life

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, Virgin Islands — Twenty aspiring filmmakers have completed the 2026 BVI Summer Film Academy, concluding four days of intensive training designed to help participants develop original film concepts while strengthening the Territory’s growing creative industry.

Hosted by the British Virgin Islands Film Commission from July 7 to 10 at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Marine Centre, the annual programme challenged participants to transform original ideas into compelling scripted and documentary projects through mentorship from internationally recognised film professionals.

Now in its third year, the Summer Film Academy has become a cornerstone of the Film Commission’s efforts to nurture local talent and expand the Virgin Islands’ creative—or “orange”—economy by investing in storytellers capable of producing content for regional and international audiences.

Unlike previous editions, this year’s academy placed storytelling at the heart of the filmmaking process rather than focusing primarily on technical production skills.

Participants selected either a scripted or documentary development track and worked collaboratively under the guidance of experienced industry mentors. Throughout the four-day programme they explored scriptwriting, documentary development, project packaging, pitching techniques and audience development before producing professional presentations for original film concepts that can continue to be developed beyond the academy.

Investing in Local Stories

Film Commissioner Natalie O. Hodge said the programme is about much more than teaching filmmaking.

“The Summer Film Academy is about more than learning the craft of filmmaking. Together with our dedicated team and industry mentors, we remain committed to helping emerging filmmakers recognise the value of their own stories while equipping them with the skills, tools, industry connections and networking opportunities needed to develop projects that can compete on regional and international stages.”

Hodge said investing in local storytellers strengthens the Virgin Islands’ creative economy while creating opportunities for entrepreneurs and laying the foundation for a sustainable film industry.

International Expertise

Participants benefited from direct mentorship by an accomplished team of film professionals, including award-winning actor, writer, director and producer James Bland, Emmy Award-nominated producer and FaceForward Productions founder CJ Faison, and award-winning filmmaker and Wulf Poyntfounder Corey Colvin.

Drawing on experience from independent films, television productions and documentaries, the facilitators encouraged participants to think beyond creative ideas and begin building original intellectual property capable of attracting future investment, production partnerships and international film festival opportunities.

Showcase of New Talent

The academy concluded with a public showcase on July 10, where participants pitched their original film concepts, demonstrating the creative growth, collaboration and confidence developed during the week.

Each participant received a certificate of completion following the presentations, officially marking the end of the 2026 Summer Film Academy – BVI Storytelling and Film Incubator.

Lead facilitator CJ Faison, who has partnered with the Film Commission since the programme’s inception, praised both the initiative and the talent emerging from the Territory.

“Every year we’re proving that the BVI doesn’t have a creativity problem—we have an access problem. The talent is here. Together, we’re creating opportunities, sharing the knowledge and building a pipeline for the next generation of world-class storytellers.”

Building a Film Industry

The Summer Film Academy forms part of the BVI Film Commission’s broader strategy to grow the Territory’s film industry by balancing efforts to attract international productions with investments in local filmmakers.

Established to position the Virgin Islands as both a filming destination and a hub for creative talent, the Commission has increasingly focused on developing original local stories through mentorship, education and strategic industry partnerships.

Its guiding theme—“Discover Your Story. Develop Your Project. Share Your Vision.”—captures the long-term ambition of empowering Virgin Islanders to transform their ideas into commercially viable projects while building sustainable careers in film and helping expand the Territory’s cultural and creative economy.

As the academy enters its fourth year in 2027, organisers hope the projects developed during this year’s programme will continue evolving into films capable of showcasing Virgin Islands stories on regional and international screens.
