The Rotary Club of Central Tortola officially commenced the 2026–2027 Rotary year with an engaging and educational meeting dedicated to Rotary International’s July Area of Focus—Maternal and Child Health.
Observed annually across the global Rotary network, Maternal and Child Health Month highlights Rotary’s commitment to ensuring mothers and children have access to quality healthcare, proper nutrition, and the resources needed to lead healthy, productive lives. Throughout July, Rotary clubs worldwide raise awareness and support initiatives aimed at improving maternal and child health, recognizing that healthy families are the cornerstone of strong and resilient communities.
In recognition of the month, the club welcomed Dr. Sharlon Lewis, who delivered an insightful presentation on the critical importance of nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life—from conception through a child’s second birthday.
Dr. Lewis explained that this period represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to influence a child’s lifelong health and development. She outlined the three key stages of the first 1,000 days—pregnancy, infancy (0–6 months), and toddlerhood (6–24 months)—and highlighted the essential role of nutrients such as folic acid, iron, iodine, and omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy. She also emphasized the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life, followed by the introduction of nutrient-rich complementary foods to support healthy growth and brain development.
The presentation also underscored the importance of routine maternal and child health monitoring, proper hydration, responsive feeding practices, and ensuring children receive the nutrition necessary for optimal physical and cognitive development.
The session generated lively discussion among members, with Rotarians actively participating by asking questions, sharing personal experiences, and exchanging practical ideas on how families and communities can work together to give every child the healthiest possible start in life.
As the club’s first meeting of the new Rotary year, the presentation established a meaningful foundation for the months ahead, reaffirming Rotary’s commitment to service through education, community engagement, and initiatives that improve the well-being of mothers and children.
The Rotary Club of Central Tortola looks forward to another impactful year of “Service Above Self,” continuing to empower families, promote healthier futures, and strengthen communities through collaboration, knowledge, and meaningful action.
