The Government of the Virgin Islands, through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sustainable Development, is inviting residents to attend a special Remembrance Ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Fancy Me—one of the deadliest maritime disasters in the Territory’s history.
The ceremony will be held on Sunday, 26 July 2026, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Sir Olva Georges Plaza in Road Town, Tortola.
The Fancy Me disaster remains one of the most heartbreaking events in Virgin Islands history. In July 1926, the vessel was returning from the Dominican Republic carrying Virgin Islanders and cargo when it encountered rough seas and sank. It is believed that approximately 59 people lost their lives, devastating families and communities across the Territory.
At a time when inter-island and regional travel depended almost entirely on small sailing vessels, the Fancy Me served as a vital link between the Virgin Islands and neighbouring Caribbean islands. Many passengers travelled in search of work and trading opportunities, making the tragedy all the more profound as it claimed fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, relatives and friends from communities throughout the Virgin Islands.
The loss of so many lives sent shockwaves across the Territory and has since become a defining chapter in the Virgin Islands’ maritime history.
