His Excellency the Governor, Daniel Pruce, has assented to the Human Rights Commission Act, 2026, marking a significant step toward the establishment of a formal human rights framework in the Virgin Islands.
The legislation, once brought into force, will provide the foundation for the creation of a Human Rights Commission aimed at promoting awareness, protecting fundamental rights, and strengthening mechanisms for addressing human rights concerns within the Territory.
The Act will not take immediate effect. According to the legislation, it will come into force on a date appointed by the Premier through a Notice published in the Gazette.
The passage of the Human Rights Commission Act represents a major development in the Territory’s ongoing discussions surrounding governance, equality, accountability, and the protection of individual freedoms.
