BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew, is being transported abroad for specialised medical observation after being admitted to the Joseph N. France General Hospital Sunday evening.
The Cabinet Secretariat said Monday that Drew remains awake, alert and in stable condition, but that his treating physicians have recommended that he leave the Federation for further observation and precautionary monitoring.
According to the official statement, the Prime Minister presented to the hospital on Sunday evening, August 30, after experiencing mild discomfort, nausea and a headache.
He was subsequently admitted and placed under the continuous care of doctors and medical specialists.
The Government said Drew has undergone comprehensive medical assessments and diagnostic reviews during approximately 18 hours of observation, with his treating physicians indicating that they are satisfied with his overall condition.
However, the medical team, “out of an abundance of caution” and based on observations made since his admission, recommended that the Prime Minister be transported overseas for specialised observation.
Arrangements for the transfer are now underway.
The Government has not disclosed the nature of the medical concern prompting the additional observation, nor has it identified where the Prime Minister will receive treatment.
The Cabinet Secretariat stressed that there is currently no indication that Drew is in an unstable condition.
“The Prime Minister remains awake, alert and in stable condition,” the official statement said.
The Government also sought to reassure citizens that the country’s affairs remain under control despite the Prime Minister’s medical situation.
“The business of the country continues seamlessly and without interruption,” the Cabinet Secretariat said.
Drew, who is also Minister of Finance, National Security, Citizenship and Immigration, Health and Human Resource Management, and Social Security, has served as Prime Minister since August 2022.
The Government is asking citizens to keep the Prime Minister in their prayers as he undergoes further medical observation abroad.
A further official update is expected at 7 p.m. Monday.
The development comes just weeks after Drew presided over the reopening of the refurbished private ward at JNF General Hospital, following a reported EC$400,000 upgrade to the facility. The Prime Minister, who also holds the Health portfolio, has made healthcare transformation a central focus of his administration.
For now, officials are emphasising that Drew’s condition is stable, while his medical team takes the additional precaution of seeking specialised observation outside the Federation.
