“WE KNOW WHERE YOUR MONEY IS”: US TREASURY SECRETARY PUTS BVI TRUST COMPANIES IN GLOBAL SPOTLIGHT

The British Virgin Islands has been thrust into the centre of an escalating international crackdown on Iranian assets after United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent publicly declared that the US knows where accounts connected to Iran’s regime are located — including within trust companies in the BVI.

In a striking warning directed at Iranian leaders, Bessent said the United States is prepared to aggressively pursue assets allegedly hidden around the world.

“We know where in the British Virgin Islands your accounts are, at these trust companies,” Bessent said. “We know the hundred-million-dollar houses you have around the world. We are going to close all that down.”

The Treasury Secretary said the Trump administration is targeting assets it alleges were stolen from the Iranian people and could ultimately be redirected toward victims of terrorism.

The comments come amid an intensifying US economic campaign against Iran, with Washington preparing additional sanctions targeting banks and financial institutions accused of facilitating Iranian transactions. Reuters and the Associated Press have reported that the US plans to continue expanding sanctions as part of a broader effort to economically isolate Tehran and entities connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

BVI Named Directly

What makes Bessent’s statement particularly significant is that he did not merely refer to offshore jurisdictions generally.

He specifically named the British Virgin Islands.

The Territory is one of the world’s leading international financial centres, with its financial services industry built around company incorporations, trusts and other corporate structures used by clients across the globe.

But Bessent’s comments raise potentially uncomfortable questions about what happens when a major global power publicly signals that it is actively tracing assets through BVI-based trust companies.

The statement does not accuse the BVI government or the Territory’s financial services industry as a whole of wrongdoing. Nor has the US Treasury Department publicly identified the specific BVI trust companies or accounts referred to by Bessent.

However, the fact that the BVI was singled out on international television places the Territory’s financial services sector squarely within a rapidly developing geopolitical confrontation.

US Vows to Freeze Assets

Bessent’s warning forms part of what the Trump administration has described as an aggressive economic campaign against Iran.

US officials have indicated that sanctions will increasingly target financial institutions, companies and international networks believed to be helping Iran circumvent existing restrictions.

“We are going after the regime’s assets,” Bessent said, adding that the administration intends to work with international partners to freeze and shut down those financial networks.

Recent reports indicate that Washington is preparing further sanctions against banks and entities accused of facilitating Iranian financial activity, while also threatening secondary sanctions against institutions that continue doing business with sanctioned Iranian networks.

Global Spotlight Returns to Offshore Finance

For the BVI, the development could once again bring international scrutiny to the Territory’s financial services industry — an industry that remains a critical pillar of the local economy.

The Territory has spent years strengthening its regulatory framework, beneficial ownership requirements and international information-sharing mechanisms in response to global pressure surrounding financial transparency and illicit finance.

But Bessent’s remarks demonstrate that, despite those reforms, the BVI remains highly visible in the global conversation surrounding international wealth, trusts and offshore financial structures.

The bigger question now is whether US authorities will move beyond rhetoric and publicly identify the BVI-based entities or trust companies they believe are connected to Iranian regime assets.

For now, no such entities have been named.

But one thing is clear:

The world’s most powerful financial enforcement agencies are watching — and the British Virgin Islands has just been named in one of the most serious geopolitical financial crackdowns currently unfolding anywhere in the world.

Editor’s Note:

Guavaberry Media will continue to monitor whether US authorities release additional information identifying any specific BVI-based financial institutions, companies or assets connected to the investigation.
