The British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) is urging customers to cooperate with authorised employees and ensure that Corporation-owned meters and electrical equipment on their properties remain safely and readily accessible.
The warning follows recent incidents in which BVIEC employees carrying out authorised meter replacements were allegedly threatened with serious physical violence.
BVIEC said threats, intimidation and aggressive behaviour towards its employees are a serious concern.
Employees routinely inspect, read, maintain, repair and replace equipment throughout the Territory, including meters and other infrastructure located on private property.
Customers are therefore asked to keep areas around meters clear and safe. Unsecured animals, locked or inaccessible areas, overgrown vegetation, vehicles, stored items and other hazards should not prevent employees from safely accessing Corporation equipment.
BVIEC also reminded customers that its By-Laws and Ordinance provide authorised employees with rights of access when carrying out legitimate Corporation duties.
Under Section 15 of the BVIEC By-Laws, consumers are required to provide duly appointed employees or representatives access to their premises between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. when necessary, and at all times during an emergency, including for meter inspections and readings and other matters connected with the supply of electricity.
Additionally, Section 27 of the BVIEC Ordinance provides for authorised access at reasonable times in connection with Corporation equipment and infrastructure. Section 28 establishes that BVIEC-owned lines, meters, fittings, works and apparatus lawfully installed on a property remain the property of the Corporation.
Customers who are uncertain about an employee requesting access are encouraged to ask for identification or contact BVIEC directly to verify the employee’s authorisation.
BVIEC is asking customers to cooperate respectfully with its employees and to ensure that Corporation equipment remains safe, clear and unobstructed.
The Corporation said safe access is essential to its ability to maintain reliable electricity service throughout the Territory.
