ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI — A lasting tribute to one of the Virgin Islands’ longstanding champions of literacy is on the way, with the East End Public Library set to be renamed the H. Lynden Smith Public Library in recognition of her distinguished contribution to education and reading development across the Territory.

The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports announced the decision during Reading Is Fun Week 2026, observed from October 5 to 9 under the theme, “Read More, Know More.”

The recognition celebrates Mrs. Smith’s longstanding commitment to literacy and her role in establishing initiatives that continue to encourage a love of reading among generations of Virgin Islanders. She founded both the BVI Reading Council and Reading Is Fun Week, helping to create a tradition that brings public and private schools together in promoting the importance of books and literacy.

Through her work, Mrs. Smith has championed reading as more than an academic skill, encouraging students to discover books as sources of knowledge, enjoyment, imagination and personal growth.

A legacy rooted in literacy

Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie B. de Castro, described the renaming as a fitting way to recognise Mrs. Smith’s service and preserve her legacy for future generations.

“It is fitting that a public library, a place dedicated to knowledge, exploration, and lifelong learning, will carry her name. Through this honour, we celebrate her service and preserve her legacy in a space where that work can continue to inspire our community,” the Minister said.

The decision places Mrs. Smith’s name on an institution dedicated to the very principles she has spent years advancing: education, access to knowledge and the development of a lifelong reading culture.

Minister de Castro also highlighted the enduring impact of Mrs. Smith’s vision, noting that Reading Is Fun Week continues to unite schools across the Territory in celebrating literacy.

“Her contribution reminds us of the lasting difference one committed educator can make across generations,” the Minister said.

She added, “Mrs. Smith, thank you for your vision, your devotion, and your enduring contribution to the Virgin Islands.”

Reading Is Fun Week celebrates the power of books

The announcement was among the highlights of this year’s Reading Is Fun Week, during which schools across the Territory participated in storytelling, reading sessions and other literacy-focused activities.

The annual observance seeks to nurture students’ appreciation for reading while reinforcing the importance of literacy in academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Reflecting on the significance of the initiative, Minister de Castro underscored the broader value of reading in shaping individuals and communities.

“Every time we open a book, we open ourselves to new possibilities. Reading expands our knowledge, strengthens our imagination, and helps us understand ourselves, one another, and the world around us,” she said.

The renaming of the East End Public Library will serve as a continuing reminder of Mrs. Smith’s contribution to the Territory’s educational development and her efforts to inspire successive generations to embrace reading.

Through this recognition, the Ministry is celebrating not only the achievements of a dedicated educator, but also the enduring importance of literacy in building a more knowledgeable and empowered Virgin Islands.
