ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI — The Virgin Islands Government’s efforts to expand professional development opportunities for public officers were highlighted following a visit by Monroe University Vice President of Admissions Operations, Mrs. Michelle Mumma, and her husband, Mr. Louis Horvath.
Mrs. Mumma met with the Deputy Governor and Permanent Secretary during her visit to the Territory, which is aimed at strengthening partnerships between Monroe University, the Government of the Virgin Islands and other stakeholders.
The visit builds on an agreement signed earlier this year between the Virgin Islands Public Service Learning Institute (VI PSLI) and Monroe University. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is intended to facilitate easier access to higher education for public officers, including through reduced tuition costs.
The partnership represents an opportunity for public officers to pursue further education and professional development while potentially making higher education more financially accessible.
By strengthening its relationship with Monroe University, the Government is seeking to support the continued development of the public service through access to educational opportunities that can help officers enhance their knowledge, skills and qualifications.
The visit also provides an opportunity for both parties to build on the existing agreement and explore ways to deepen their collaboration.
While the Government has described the partnership as an example of public service transformation at work, its long-term impact will depend on the opportunities made available to officers, the uptake of the programme and the extent to which the training supports improved public service delivery.
For public officers interested in advancing their education, the partnership could provide an additional pathway to academic and professional growth.
The Virgin Islands Public Service Learning Institute and Monroe University’s continued collaboration will therefore be important in translating the agreement into practical benefits for the Territory’s public service and, ultimately, the people it serves.
