ROAD TOWN, Tortola — Organisers of the 72nd Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival say preparations for the 2026 celebrations are already well underway, with officials promising one of the territory’s biggest cultural showcases in recent years.

The Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF&FC) has confirmed that the festival will run from July 25 to August 11, 2026, featuring a packed calendar of concerts, cultural events, parades and pageantry across Tortola.

Festival Chair Natalie Penn Lake said the committee began planning the celebrations as early as October 2025 in an effort to improve organisation and secure performers months ahead of time.

“We have already started planning the Emancipation Festival since last year,” Penn Lake said during a recent radio interview, noting that several headline acts had already been booked since January.

Organisers have announced an extensive entertainment lineup blending reggae, soca, dancehall and local Virgin Islands talent. Confirmed performers include Beres Hammond, Popcaan, Sizzla, Patrice Roberts, Nadia Batson, R. City and local star Problem Child.

Among the featured events are Calypso competitions, Soca Monarch, Gospel Fest, the Miss BVI Pageant, Rise and Shine Tramp, Fungi Fest and the Grand Parade — longstanding staples of the territory’s emancipation celebrations.

Officials have also announced changes to the traditional parade schedule. In 2026, the Emancipation Parade will take place on the Saturday after August Monday rather than on the holiday itself, with organisers citing scheduling conflicts involving the Rise and Shine Tramp celebrations.

The 2026 festival theme, selected from a public competition, is “Culture Rising, Hearts Aligned, VI Festival, One of a Kind,” while the official slogan reads: “Echoes of Heritage, Rhythm in the Mix, Celebrate Virgin Islands Festival 2026.”

Veteran cultural advocate Lavida Cottoy has been named the 2026 Festival Honouree, with the Road Town Festival Village expected to bear her name in recognition of her decades of service to Virgin Islands culture and entertainment. Roberto “Tico” Harrigan will serve as Grand Parade Marshal.

Festival organisers say more than 35 local artists and bands are expected to participate alongside regional and international performers as part of efforts to strengthen local cultural representation.

The Emancipation Festival remains the British Virgin Islands’ premier cultural celebration, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Africans in the British Caribbean while showcasing Virgin Islands music, food, folklore and identity.
