ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI — Governor of the Virgin Islands, Daniel Pruce, has paid tribute to Sarah Penney following her sudden passing, describing her as a beloved member of the Virgin Islands community whose contributions to the arts and environmental advocacy touched countless lives.
In a heartfelt statement, Governor Pruce said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of Penney’s death, noting that her passion, energy and commitment left an indelible mark on the Territory.
Penney was widely known for her work with Firebird Performing Arts Studio, where she inspired generations of young people through dance and the performing arts. Her dedication to nurturing confidence, creativity and self-expression among the Territory’s youth earned her admiration from students, parents and fellow educators alike.
Reflecting on a recent memory, Governor Pruce recalled Penney leading a large group in a Charleston dance performance during the Great Catsby fundraising event held at Government House earlier this year in support of the Humane Society.
“That moment so vividly captured her energy, passion and spirit,” the Governor said.
Beyond the arts, Penney was also recognised as a passionate environmental advocate through her leadership with Green V.I. Her efforts to promote sustainability and conservation helped foster greater public awareness of environmental issues and encouraged residents to take a more active role in protecting the Territory’s natural resources.
Governor Pruce said her environmental work created a lasting legacy that will continue to influence future generations.
“She championed sustainability and conservation, helping to raise awareness and foster a stronger sense of shared responsibility for the natural beauty of these islands,” he stated.
Describing Penney’s impact as one that extended across the entire community, the Governor acknowledged the profound sense of loss being felt throughout the Virgin Islands.
“She had an enormous impact across the whole community. We all feel her loss deeply,” he said.
The Governor extended his condolences to Penney’s husband, son, family members, friends, students and all those whose lives she touched.
