On Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, the Sea Cow’s Bay Heritage Group will be hosting A Cultural Emancipation Celebration In Sea Cow’s Bay On August Tuesday, at the Ebenezer Thomas Primary school grounds from 10:00am to 6:00pm. The day will be filled with delicious cultural food, lots of fun and many cultural activities reminiscent of the good old days.
Food
From 10:00am visitors to the Cultural Emancipation Celebration will enjoy a variety of traditional dishes including goat head soup, peas soup, fry pot fish, johnny cake; almond, ginger and coconut sugar cakes; guava cheese, cakes and other treats. There will be an assortment of local drinks on sale. The highlight of the day will be the showcasing of the mango fruit called the Mango Medley where persons will be able to have free samples of several different dishes demonstrating the versatility of the mango fruit.
Non Food Items
Fruit trees will be available just in time for the upcoming planting season. There will also be a variety of herbs on sale. Persons will be able to purchase locally made straw hats, straw bags, and other hand made straw products.
Plat Pole Dancing and Demo
The Dynamic Ribbon Dancers will entertain us with their beautiful plat pole dancing routines. Plat pole dancing brings back nostalgic memories. There will be a plat pole demonstration where anyone can join in and learn the art of platting a pole.
Other Activities
Other activities will include: 1) donkey carriage rides around the school; 2)traditional races: late for school (bring your socks and tennis shoes), lime and spoon, sack race, three-legged race, bucket race and flat race; and 3) bun eating competition. These activities will be for both adults and children.
Displays
On display tables there will be items that give us a snapshot of our past.
1) Items that children played with long ago: the two-wheel and four-wheel roller, jacks, bat and ball, marbles, and more
2) Musical instruments: shak-shak, squash and triangle
3) House hold items and clothing made from different types of bags
4) This year’s posters will feature horse owners, jockeys, musicians and softball teams of the village of Sea Cow’s Bay
Fungi Music and Story Telling
Music will be playing all day long. In between the sweet sound of fungi music, well known local author Janice Nibbs will tell us stories of life in Sea Cow’s Bay. Janice’s flare for storytelling makes you feel as if you were there at the time the events took place.
A Cultural Emancipation Celebration In Sea Cow’s Bay On August Tuesday will be a wonderful way to celebrate our 192nd year of freedom from slavery. Great food, great fun, a place to see family and perhaps reunite with old friends. Everyone is encouraged to come out, stop by, drop by and spend a little time at cultural emancipation day in Sea Cow’s Bay.
