The Government of the Virgin Islands has formalised its Centenarian Programme through a newly approved policy framework, doubling the one-time grant for eligible Virgin Islanders who reach 100 years old from $5,000 to $10,000.
The policy was highlighted in a statement delivered in the House of Assembly on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, following Cabinet’s approval of the framework governing the longstanding programme.
Since 2002, the Government has honoured Virgin Islanders who attain the remarkable milestone of 100 years. The new policy establishes a formal approach to ensuring that centenarians are recognised consistently, transparently and with dignity.
Under the revised programme, eligible Virgin Islanders who reach 100 will receive a one-time grant of $10,000, whether they reside in the Territory, overseas or in Government-operated facilities.
In addition to the financial grant, recipients will receive a congratulatory card from His Majesty The King, a commemorative plaque, a gift or fruit basket, and family photographs highlighting the celebration.
Belongers who reach the age of 100 while living in the Territory will also receive the King’s congratulatory card and a gift or fruit basket.
To strengthen the programme’s administration, a confidential register of seniors aged 95 and older will be maintained to help identify those approaching their centenary and ensure that eligible individuals are not overlooked.
The policy recognises the importance of honouring older persons and celebrating their contributions to the Territory’s history, culture and development.
During the statement, tribute was paid to Mrs. Floresa George, Mrs. Iris Harrigan and Mrs. Christeen Hodge, while condolences were extended to the families of the late Mr. Evelyn Hodge, Mrs. Esmie “Muddy” Stoutt and Mrs. Enelle Smith.
Centenarians represent a living connection to generations of Virgin Islanders whose experiences have helped shape the Territory. The formalisation of the programme provides a structured way for the Government to recognise these milestones and celebrate the lives and legacies of those who reach 100 years.
